SAMOA: Tariff surcharge
adjustment due to fuel price variations
Source:
EPC Press Release
Since the tariff surcharge adjustment on 1
February 2008, fuel prices have increased by
14%. During this time the Electric Power
Corporation (EPC) has absorbed this continuing
increase in the cost of fuel by overstretching
its financial resources. These rising costs, due
to overseas factors beyond our control, have now
made it absolutely necessary for the Corporation
to adjust its electricity tariff rates to ensure
that the supply of electricity to our customers
is always made readily available.
The Electric Power Corporation wishes to inform
the public and all its electricity users
(Readable and Prepayment users), that an
additional 3.46% will be added to the current
22.3% fuel surcharge, resulting in a total fuel
surcharge of 25.76%. This surcharge will be
applied to all electricity meters read from 01
June 2008, and includes consumption in the prior
months.

AMERICAN SAMOA: ASCC/GEAR-UP to Host Summer
Algebra and Fitness Mini-Camp
Source:
ASCC Press Release
Beginning on Monday, June 9th, the American
Samoa Community College (ASCC) will host the
Summer Algebra and Fitness Mini Camp for GEAR-UP
students, a partnership venture by GEAR-UP
American Samoa (GUAS), the TA’ITA’ITAMA Prevent
Underage Drinking Initiative, and the American
Samoa National Olympic Committee (ASNOC).
GEAR-UP Director Tupua Roy Fua said
that the three participating partner
organizations will hold three one-week mini
camps, from June 9th to the 27th, in order to
accommodate as many students as possible from
the GEAR UP Cohort DOE and private schools with
the Fitness and the Algebra Mini Camp sessions
taking place
separately.
The ASNOC Fitness Mini Camp, which takes place
from June 9th to the 27th, will offer a total of
30 contact hours of sports training to 200
students per five-day session. ASNOC will host a
team of coaches from the Oceania Olympic
Foundation to conduct a “train the trainer”
certificate program for participating island
coaches as they conduct their assessment and
training with GEAR-UP students. The first two
sessions, which take place for six hours daily,
will serve GEAR-UP students, while students from
outside the program may take part in the third
week session. “The Fitness Camp will provide
physical assessment for students who have
demonstrated the skills and physical ability to
excel in sports,” explained Tupua.
“The assessment tests and sports activities will
help to make the student better prepared for a
variety of sports, such as table tennis, track
and field, volleyball, basketball, and other
activities on the ASNOC program.”
GUAS cohort math teachers have selected the
Algebra Mini Camp participants, based on highest
math skills to advanced algebra knowledge. All
participants submitted a Consent Form Letter
from their parents and received the approval of
their school GUAS coordinator. The Algebra Mini
Camp will take place in the GUAS Office and will
host 25 students in the morning and another 25
in the afternoon for the duration of the
five-day mini-camp.
The second and third mini-camp sessions will
follow the same format. “We plan to use
assistive technology to work with students
who’ve demonstrated a readiness to advance to
Algebra 1,” Tupua said. “In addition to working
on their algebra skills, they will also receive
some instruction on basic computer skills and
learning software.”
At the start of all three Algebra and Fitness
Mini-Camps, the Chairperson of TA’ITA’ITAMA, the
First Lady Mrs. Maryanne Tulafono will make a
presentation on important life building skills
in an effort to prevent alcohol abuse and
violent behavior. “We are very grateful to
inter-weave
the content from TA’ITA’ITAMA into the
mini-camps,” explained Tupua.
“They will have a chance to work with all
participating students in either the Fitness or
Algebra Mini Camp sessions. With most of the
students in their early teens, we feel that they
should have exposure to the issues TA’ITA’ITAMA
seeks to make them aware of.”
GEAR-UP, headquartered on the ASCC campus,
extended the invitation to students in all of
its cohort schools to attend the Mini Camps, and
Tupua says the response has indicated a very
strong interest. “Between A’ITA’ITAMA, ASNOC and
GEAR-UP, I feel we’ve put together a fun program
for the students”.
The GEAR-UP cohort schools in American Samoa
which participate in the GEAR-UP program
include: Matafao Elementary School, South
Pacific International Christian Center, Manulele
Tausala Elementary School, Tafuna Elementary
School, Kanana Fou Elementary School, Iakina
Academy, Lupelele Elementary School, Pavaiai
Elementary School, Siliaga Elementary School,
Leone Midkiff Elementary School, St. Theresa
Elementary School, Alataua Elementary School,
and Taputapu Elementary School.

AROUND THE WORLD:
Vanuatu and Solomons set up for top of the table
clash
Source:
Oceania Football
Confederation
Vanuatu finished Match Day Four of the Oceania
Football Confederation (OFC) Futsal Championship
in first place – equal in points with the
Solomon Islands – after beating Fiji 5-2 at the
Vodafone Arena in Suva today.
The result sets up an exciting top of the table
clash tomorrow night where the winner will be
firm favourites to advance to the FIFA Futsal
World Cup in Brazil in September.
In other matches New Caledonia and Tahiti fought
out a 2-2 draw while New Zealand beat Tuvalu
13-1in the last match of the night.
Solomon Islands and Vanuatu both sit two points
clear of third placed Tahiti who fought back
from a two goal deficit to earn a point in the
opening match of the day.
New Caledonia opened the scoring in the third
minute of the match when Yvan Pourouoro
converted from close range after a swift New
Caledonia counter attack.
Jerry Iaruel increased the lead for New
Caledonia two minutes into the second half and
it looked as if they were set to collect their
first win of the tournament.
But the Tahitian spirit should never be counted
out and goals to Yvan Pourouoro and Riaria kept
alive Tahiti’s shot at the championship. For
Vanuatu it was Jack Viro Ala who opened the
scoring, penetrating the Fijian backline before
slotting the ball under Fiji goalkeeper Nishad
Wasim Ali.
They added to their lead in the twelfth minute
when Derek Malas converted the first of his two
goals on the evening.
Fiji looked like they were set to stage a
comeback when Sandeep Sanjesh Nair drew one back
for the hosts but it only served to inspire
Vanuatu into pushing more numbers forward and
goals to Louis Dominique, Ala and Malas sealed
the win.
Assis Chand scored a late consolation goal for
Fiji with three minutes left to play.
New Zealand received a much needed moral booster
after their heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Tahiti
last night and got it care of a 13-1 victory
over Tuvalu.
Kiwi captain Bakr Al Saudi went on a scoring
rampage opening his tournament account in the
second minute and closing it – seven goals later
– in the 40th minute.
It was the most comprehensive win of the
tournament so far and six New Zealand players
found the scoresheet including Ouadhah Ragued,
Marvin Eakins, Gregory O’Connor, Yukin Naidoo
and Andrew Gwilliam.
Mahanga Teiaputi scored a consolation goal for
Tuvalu in the 35th minute much to the crowds
delight and despite their tiring legs the
newcomers to the tournament never gave up.

FIJI: ANZ Senior Economist Forecasts 1 Percent
Growth For Fiji
Source:
ANZ Bank
ANZ Senior Economist Jasmine Robinson delivered
a presentation on the world economy, economic
outlook for Fiji and the currency markets at an
ANZ Business Breakfast at JJ’s on the Park in
Suva yesterday.
Robinson spoke about the developments in global
financial markets and how this has changed
global growth prospects, with consequent impacts
on the Fiji economy.
She said at the same time, this slowdown has
occurred in an environment of accelerating
commodity prices, which has raised inflation
expectations.
Peter Fuata, ANZ Senior Markets Dealer said
global markets are dynamic in nature and the
regular detailed analysis from our economists
ensures our customers are kept up to date with
market trends.
“It is an added benefit that our senior
economists are able to regularly sit down and
discuss important economic issues with our
customers,” Fuata said.
According to Robinson, ANZ expects the Fiji
economy to expand by around 1 percent per year
in 2008 and 2009 as the softer global economic
environment impacts consumption and investment.
“Some improvement in mining output, a resilient
tourism sector and servicing niche markets are
expected to support Fiji’s growth outlook in the
future.
“Investment remains key to lifting Fiji’s
economic growth over the medium term. The
implementation of a reform across the industry
will go a long way towards lifting confidence
and investment and this will help place Fiji’s
economy on a stronger growth footing,” Robinson
added.
“Unfortunately business confidence in Fiji
remains low due to a number of factors including
political uncertainty and the world economy.
“Government should look to create business
confidence by actively supporting expansion of
existing businesses and encouraging both local
and foreign investment.
“While agriculture has potential exciting
success stories such as tourism cannot be
ignored,” Robinson said.
Robert Bell, General Manager ANZ Fiji reiterated
comments made earlier in the year about Fiji’s
potential.
He said Fiji has deep water ports and is
positioned well to be the centre for trade in
the Pacific.
“We have two universities and an educated and
willing workforce. While it is easy to criticize
Fiji’s infrastructure it remains ahead of many
Pacific countries. Fiji still leads the Pacific
with its tourism offering and has further
potential to increase visitor arrivals,” Bell
said.
Robinson will be in Fiji for the remainder of
this week conducting additional presentations
and further industry meetings.
Established in 1880, ANZ is the largest bank in
Fiji with 16 branches, two prime offices (Nadi
and Suva), 67 Automated Teller Machines, 831
Electronic Merchants and 734 EFTPOS terminals
The NCAA recently says coaches can't come to
combines off their own campuses, but Sullivan
says they're looking to get an exception and
hope to have another 40-50 coaches back next
year.
The combines have helped over 800 students
receive more than 10 million dollars in
scholarships and grants.
