The New Zealand Pacific
Business Council (NZPBC) recently joined the Manukau City Council in
leading a successful trade mission to French Polynesia.
More than 50 delegates, including representatives from 15 New
Zealand companies, took part in the six-day mission to increase
trade between the two countries.
Formed through a continuing relationship between NZPBC and the
French Polynesian Government, the venture was the direct consequence
of the NZPBC hosting French Polynesian President Oscar Temaru in
Auckland in April 2005.
French Polynesia was well represented at the Pacific Trade Expo held
at the Telstra Clear Pacific Events Centre in Manukau two months
ago. That event was the first of its kind and led to an estimated
NZ$4.8 million in direct sales and potential future sales of $15-$20
million.
President Temaru invited the NZPBC and the Manukau City Council to
send a trade mission. The two organisations saw the advantages,
accepted his invitation and quickly set about arranging last week’s
visit.
During a two-day trade display at Tahiti’s Radisson Plaza Resort
last week, it became clear that New Zealand’s export community can
provide the French Polynesian market with a reliable supply of high
quality products and services, at a cost-effective price.
The average per capita income of French Polynesia’s 250,000 people
is higher than New Zealand’s, meaning the opportunities for New
Zealand to extend its $174 million market are very promising.
This trade mission captured opportunities for exporters among the
New Zealand mission delegates in the areas of construction, food and
beverage, manufacturing and security technology.
It also highlighted the significant trade imbalance existing between
Pacific Island nations and New Zealand.
The visit prompted interest from the Ministry of Agriculture (French
Polynesia) about having a Trade Mission to New Zealand from their
food and beverage sector. Negotiations have already begun |

between the French
Polynesian Government Agencies and Te Ohu Kai Moana Trustee Ltd and
Manukau Institute of Technology regarding capacity building in the
areas of fisheries and education.
Mission delegates and their counterparts in French Polynesia viewed
the trade mission as beneficial to all parties involved. New markets
and products were identified and the trading relationship between
New Zealand and French Polynesia was reinforced.
NZPBC will continue to engage other Pacific Island economies and
facilitate two-way trade in the region.
